Sts Peter and Paul Primary School began in 1968. The school is situated in Wisdom Street, Garran, in the Parish of the Transfiguration. There are two primary schools within the parish. Our sister school is Holy Trinity, located at Curtin. The Parish of the Transfiguration was formed in 1994 when the parishes of Holy Trinity and Sts Peter and Paul were amalgamated.
Students from, Years Kinder to 6, who attend the school, primarily come from the suburbs of Garran, Hughes, O'Malley and Swinger Hill. However, many of the students also live in suburbs located in the Tuggeranong Valley and Jerrabomberra (N.S.W). The school has a multicultural population of approximately 360 students.
The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, an international apostolic congregation, served the school for almost thirty years. Their founder, Francis Siedliska had a vision of charity and this is the inspiration for the sisters' life and service. Until the end of 1995, the Principal of the school was provided from the Congregation.
Sts Peter and Paul is set in spacious, leafy grounds that are well maintained and cared for. Students have both grassed oval and asphalt areas as well as access to play equipment, sandpit, fitness track and environment centre. Half the school has received a million dollar refurbishment that has enabled the school to offer a 21st Century educational learning environment; the envy of many schools.
Sts Peter and Paul is also known for its strong community spirit and commitment to enrolling the whole family not just the child. Parents are always welcome in to he school and encouraged to be actively involved in their child's school life through classroom help; attending Prayer Assemblies, Masses and Awards Assemblies; fundraising events, social events, excursions, canteen and uniform shop volunteers, etc.
Sts Peter and Paul offers a unique curriculum that takes the excellence of a traditional primary education and blends it with innovative and flexible methods. The curriculum is woven together by a strong Christian ethos with an emphasis on values. Literacy and Numeracy are key focus areas in our teaching and learning. We are also known for our Rich Project curriculum in Years 1-6: a series of exciting, substantial, holistic and challenging Projects. These Projects focus on the individual child, aim for deep learning to occur and are designed to promote motivation, confidence, self-organisation and independence. We believe in a culture of inclusion where meeting the special needs of students is seen as the teacher's responsibility, supported by the Learning Support team.
Our well-resourced resource centre has no physical walls and is situated centrally so that eight classrooms 'spill out' into the 'library' space and it becomes an extension of the classroom. Information and Communication Technologies are very evident with a secure network, a ratio of 1 computer to 3 students and an Interactive Whiteboard in each classroom and library.
