Religious Education

Parents entrust their children to our care, with various expectations. By choosing a Catholic school, they should be able to find an environment that is permeated by Gospel values and one that challenges everyone to move towards personal wholeness. Students at Sts Peter and Paul come from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and cultures. We believe our school community has the potential to enrich the faith and educational opportunities available to all.

Our school community acts in partnership with parents as we nurture the faith of their children through experiences of unity, mutual affection, belonging and prayer. Each staff member is called to contribute to the faith of the school and has the responsibility of creating and participating in the prayer and liturgical life of the school.

Students are encouraged to seek God in their lives, through actions, sincere prayer, active liturgy and appropriate social involvement. We have children participating in daily prayer and in weekly prayer assemblies. Each term, children have the opportunity to attend Adoration in the Church, Mass, liturgical celebrations and participate in mission based activities.

The Religious Education Curriculum is based on “Treasures New and Old”, the Religious Education Curriculum K-12 for the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. Each year the staff decide on an over-arching theme which highlights the school’s focus for the year and which is linked to our Vision statement. Four sub-themes allow us to target specific values, practices and rituals, prayers, liturgy and music and special events which are addressed collectively by the whole class/school program including the Religious Education, Rich Project, co-curricula and celebratory programs.

Core Values are the deeper values that we want our students to develop. These are related to the Annual Integrated School Focus and the term sub-themes. We determine how we will witness these values being treated seriously in each class. “Walter the Jellybean Dragon” enables the students to visually record when they witness others living these values. Practices and Rituals are identified from the values. They are focused on in class prayer times, school prayer assemblies and Masses. We welcome parents to all of our class and school prayer assemblies and Masses.

Children are prepared for Reconciliation in Year 2, First Communion (Eucharist) in Year 3 and Confirmation in Year 6. Parent meetings and information nights held in the Parish, are part of these programs, linking the school and parish. Unless families are able to support their child at this time we recommend that families wait until they are ready as a family to prepare for the sacrament.

Curriculum Outcomes an Key Concepts for Religious Education

The Religious Education Guidelines syllabus, Treasures New and Old, is based on stage outcomes and key concepts on seven major content areas. Each content strand is given focus and the strands together are given coherence through the following theological statements:

JESUS CHRIST

Word made flesh, the wisdom, freedom and compassion of God

SACRAMENTS

Ritual celebrations of the experience of God’s Spirit in the midst of life.

SCRIPTURE

CHRISTIAN LIFE
